Precision nutrition for Merino ewes

چکیده

Automatic monitoring of liveweight and weight change is now possible with walk–through weighing systems. Computer–based drafting can incorporate a range of measurements such as pregnancy status, past performance, value–for–wool and value–for–meat to implement decisions on supplementary feeding. The combination of these technologies will provide the option of allocating animals likely to give the best response to improved nutrition to supplementary feeding regimes or of giving them priority in rotational grazing systems. The advent of new walk–through–weighing equipment and improved automated drafting systems makes it imperative that we initiate research into the new era of sheep nutrition that has been facilitated by this new technology. Potential effects of precision nutrition in the sheep industry include improved lifetime productivity, better reproductive performance, production to specification, reduced death rates and improved parasite management.

An Effect of Previous Nutritional Treatment on the Ovulation Rate of Merino Ewes

The expression of oestrus in ewes may be influenced by previous nutritional *history. Smith (1966) reported that restricted nutrition during the spring delayed or reduced the expression of oestrus in Merino ewes during the following autumn, even though nutrition had been improved and ewe live weights had recovered before the rams were introduced. Hunter (1962) and Smith (1962) have also suggest...

Whole-body fatness is a good predictor of phenotypic feed and liveweight efficiency in adult Merino ewes fed a poor-quality diet

Weight loss due to poor nutrition in adult ewes over summer–autumn is economically expensive due to immediate costs such as feed and labour but also due to ongoing costs to reproductive success and ewe health. We predicted that adult Merino ewes with a higher proportion of fat would be more efficient, both through lower intake and reduced weight loss. Four-year-old Merino ewes (n = 64) were hel...

The Repeatability of Ovulation Rate in Merino Ewes

The ovaries of 3 groups of Merino ewes were examined for corpora lutea by laparoscopy every 17 days between 28.3.74 and 16.6.75. During the 1974 breeding season the mean body weight of the ewes was maintained at 37 kg. Between the 1974 and -1975 breeding seasons the nutrition of the ewes was varied to give groups of ewes with mean body weights of 37, 41 and 46 kg; groups of ewes of low, medium ...

Production responses of two genetic different types of Merino sheep subjected to different nutritional levels.

The primary selection objective in the South African Mutton Merino is meat production, while wool plays a secondary role. The Merino, on the other hand is selected for wool production. Respectively 20 and 23 of each genetic different type of ewes were used in a 15-week indoor study to quantify the influence of nutrient intake on certain production traits when fed at different levels of their re...

Reproductive performance of commercial Merino, Dohne Merino and SA Mutton Merino flocks in the Southern Cape

Data of 23 189 Merino ewes (8 farms), 7692 Dohne Merino ewes (3 farms) and 2399 SA Mutton Merino ewes (1 farm) were recorded for the 1988-1991 lambing seasons. The udders of ewes present at lamb marking were inspected to differentiate between barren (unlambed), lambed and lost (lambed ewes suckling no progeny), and wet (lambed and suckling ~ 1 lamb) ewes, using the 'wet and dry' technique. The ...
